Bahrain is preparing for its fourth national participation at Expo 2025 Osaka, which will run from April 13th to October 13th.
Under the theme. ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’, Expo 2025 will explore three key sub-themes- Saving Lives, Empowering Lives, and Connecting Lives. Bahrain’s pavilion, situated in the Empowering Lives district, will be one of the most sustainable structures at the event, with its design celebrating the kingdom’s deep connection to the sea, from the ancient Dilmun civilization to the present day.
The pavilion, designed by Paris-based architect Lina Ghotmeh, spans 995 square meters and rises 13.7 meters across four levels, offering panoramic views of the sea. It showcases Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage, maritime history, and future ambitions, all while emphasizing sustainability. Ghotmeh’s design utilizes over 3,000 pieces of untreated wood, featuring intricate joinery to minimize waste and eliminate the need for additional materials. The pavilion also takes advantage of natural cooling and ventilation, reflecting Bahrain’s commitment to environmental responsibility. After Expo 2025, the pavilion’s components are planned to be fully recycled.
The pavilion’s layout includes five distinct areas, each dedicated to one of the five senses, offering an immersive experience that engages sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The design incorporates collaborations with various Bahraini and international artists, including scent artist Sissel Tolaas and composer Hassan Hujairi, ensuring a multi-sensory experience for visitors. Furthermore, the pavilion will feature a dedicated floor highlighting Bahrain’s economic development and its position as a global business hub.
A café led by renowned chef Tala Bashmi will offer a fusion of Bahraini and Japanese culinary traditions, while the gift shop will sell innovative products inspired by Bahrain’s cultural heritage. Additionally, Bahraini fashion designer Lulwa Al Amin has created unique uniforms for the pavilion’s volunteers, blending traditional Bahraini style with modern flair.
Bahrain’s participation at Expo 2025 offers a platform to showcase its dynamic cultural, economic, and innovative achievements while emphasizing sustainability, craftsmanship, and the country’s enduring maritime legacy. The pavilion aims to strengthen Bahrain’s global position as a centre of culture, innovation, and economic growth.
