Singer Katy Perry and CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King are about to blast off into space with Blue Origin this spring. And these fierce females won’t be on their lonesome as they’ll be part of an all-women's crew.
Joining them are former NASA engineer Aisha Bowe, research scientist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and helicopter pilot Lauren Sánchez, who just happens to be the fiancée of Blue Origin’s founder, Jeff Bezos.
Katy is beyond excited to be part of this astronautic journey. She hopes it will inspire not only her daughter but others to reach for the stars—literally and figuratively. Blue Origin shared that Katy is ‘honoured’ to take on this mission, showing that anyone can aim high, no matter who they are.
Lauren also hopes that this will ‘inspire the next generation of explorers.’
They will be taking an 11-minute ride past the Kármán line (aka the boundary of space), just like the 10 crewed flights before them…and the spacecraft doesn’t need a pilot. What’s cool about this flight though is it will be the first time in 62 years that women are going to space without a man onboard. The last time something historic like this was made was in 1963 when Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.
Blue Origin's all-female NS-31 mission follows right after the successful NS-30 flight, which sent six tourists to space. The crew included venture capitalist Lane Bess, Spanish TV host Jesús Calleja, physicist Elaine Chia Hyde, reproductive endocrinologist Richard Scott, hedge fund partner Tushar Shah, and an unnamed crewmember. It’s clear that Blue Origin is making space more accessible—and now, with an all-female crew, it’s even more groundbreaking. Even NASA plans to land the first woman on the moon in 2026.
